Celebrating Three Decades of Sound: Singapore Chinese Orchestra’s 30th Anniversary Season Blends Nostalgia and Outreach

The Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO) is marking its 30th anniversary with a sweeping, six-month programme titled “Looking Back, Giving Back,” which runs through August 2026. The milestone season features seven major concert productions, community performances, free public concerts, and a line of limited-edition merchandise, all designed to honour the orchestra’s past while extending its reach into new audiences and spaces.

The celebrations kicked off with a 30 percent discount on all SCO30 ticketed shows, available now through the end of August. Members of the Friends of SCO programme gain early booking access and up to 50 percent off select tickets during a limited priority period in June. The centrepiece of the season is “Resonating 30,” a tribute concert series that brings back former music directors to lead works closely tied to their tenures. These performances revive landmark pieces from different eras of the orchestra’s history, offering audiences a chance to hear how the ensemble’s sound has evolved under each conductor’s influence.

“We wanted to create a season that says thank you to the people who built this orchestra,” said an SCO spokesperson in a statement. “By inviting back our past leaders, we’re not just revisiting old music—we’re showing how each era’s vision shaped who we are today.”

In September, the orchestra presents a Mid-Autumn family concert led by Principal Conductor Quek Ling Kiong in his “Ah De” persona, a more relaxed, interactive alter ego. Tickets for that performance are priced at $30, a nod to the anniversary. Then, in October, SCO will collaborate with The Purple Symphony, Singapore’s largest inclusive orchestra, for a joint performance that places musicians with and without disabilities on the same stage. That concert underscores a broader push toward accessibility and community integration.

Beyond ticketed events, the orchestra is taking music into public spaces from August through December. Free performances will pop up at parks, community centres, hospitals, and other venues across Singapore, part of an outreach programme designed to meet audiences where they live. Additional initiatives include an invite-only diplomatic concert, international collaborations, and a suite of collectible merchandise.

The most visually playful offering is the “Little Treble Makers” plushie set, featuring four instrument-inspired characters: a drum, erhu, zhongruan, and sheng. Each plush toy is designed to reflect how different instruments blend within the orchestra, reimagined as a cuddly collectible. Complementing that is a keycap set called “The Treble Boost,” whose four designs draw on traditional Chinese instruments and their musical associations: the erhu for rich emotion, the guzheng for calmness and flow, the drum for rhythm and drive, and the suona for its bold, piercing sound.

Tickets for all SCO30 concerts are available via BookMyShow. Friends of SCO members can access priority booking and additional discounts through the end of June 2026. For full programme details and schedules, visit the SCO website.

As SCO turns 30, the season’s dual focus on heritage and outreach signals a broader ambition: to remain a vital cultural institution while inviting more Singaporeans—and visitors—into the conversation. By weaving tribute concerts with community engagement and even a touch of whimsy, the orchestra is proving that three decades of tradition can still feel fresh, welcoming, and forward-looking.
