The city-state’s largest nocturnal celebration returns August 21 through September 5, transforming the Bras Basah-Bugis precinct into an open-air wonderland for 16 straight nights. This year’s Singapore Night Festival centers on the theme “Myths and Legends,” featuring 97 distinct programmes, monumental facade projections, roaming stilt-walking neon birdmen, and extended hours at national museums. Nearly all attractions remain free, with a handful of ticketed experiences ranging from $10 to $60.
Where and When the Magic Happens
The festival runs nightly from 7:30 p.m. to 11 p.m., with extended hours until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. The action unfolds across four main zones: the Museum Zone, Zone 1 (Funan to Chijmes), Zone 2 (Cathay Green to Waterloo Centre), and Zone 3 (Bras Basah Complex and Stamford Arts Centre). Festivalgoers can access the area via City Hall, Bras Basah, Bencoolen, Dhoby Ghaut, or Bugis MRT stations.
Seven Can’t-Miss Highlights
Tales of Earth and Sea at the National Museum of Singapore
Indonesian multimedia collective The Fox, The Folks transforms the museum’s neoclassical facade into a pulsing, technicolor canvas of Southeast Asian folklore. A custom soundtrack by Singapore’s Artusik and UiTM Malaysia accompanies the projection. For optimal viewing, attend the 8 p.m. opening-night launch on August 21, when roaming Birdmen perform directly in front of the display.
Birdmen by Close-Act Theatre
These towering, glowing prehistoric puppets from the Netherlands make their Southeast Asian debut. The stilt-walkers interact with crowds while eerie music fills the streets. They roam only August 21 to 23, starting at the National Museum before traversing Waterloo Street, Armenian Street, The Cathay, SOTA, and Queen Street. Catch them at 7:45 p.m. or 9:15 p.m.
Malam Projection Mapping Competition at The Cathay
For the first time, the festival hosts a Southeast Asian projection competition. The top 18 entries play across The Cathay’s historic facade from August 21 to 28. From August 29 to September 4, only the top five finalist works remain, offering a tighter, highly polished show.
The Lost Legacy of Fort Canning: The Forbidden Hill
Sight Lines Co. and The Urbanist Singapore lead a 70-minute nocturnal audio journey through Fort Canning, complete with live traditional Malay dance and haunting soundscapes. This major ticketed event ($60) explores the ancient myths of Bukit Larangan. It runs on eight select nights only; visitors should bring smartphones and earphones.
Between Stories at Chijmes
Inside Chijmes hall, a 20-minute live performance combines theatre and light shows across convent walls. Inspired by the Chijmes Gate of Hope—where unwanted baby girls were once abandoned—the show follows a mother’s search for reconnection. Performances happen September 3 and 4 at 7:30 p.m., 8:45 p.m., and 10 p.m. Tickets cost $20 via Klook.
Stormy Straits at Bugis Street Art Lane
Large luminous sculptures inspired by early-1800s Bugis seafarers transform the street into an immersive free installation. Glowing scaffolding towers over the lane, featuring billowing monsoon clouds and illuminated lighthouses that visitors can walk beneath.
Rising of Sister Islands at Funan Kinetic Wall
This speech-activated installation draws on the tragic folklore of Minah and Linah, two sisters who drowned escaping pirates and became the Sister Islands. Visitors stand before coral tables and call out the sisters’ names, triggering a dazzling synchronized glow from the towering kinetic wall.
Beyond the Main Attractions
The festival umbrella includes additional experiences. A Date With Tradition at Stamford Arts Centre offers roving Chinese opera performances, gamelan storytelling, and a Kathakali-inspired retelling of “Journey to the West.” Citrus Fest 2026 tackles burnout culture in the arts through informal gatherings and workshops. For retail therapy, shop eco-friendly brands at Temasek Shophouse’s Green-House or browse the art and craft market Pasar Mad-lam.
Navigating the Festival
Curated trails and maps are available at heritage.sg/sgnightfest/maps. The Hype Chaser trail covers major highlights, while the Family Tribe trail suits mixed-age groups seeking diverse programming.
With 16 nights of free entertainment, immersive storytelling, and cultural discovery, this year’s festival promises to be Singapore’s most ambitious nocturnal celebration yet—proving that myths and legends still have power to unite and inspire.
