Singapore’s vibrant independent bookshop scene is coming together for an unprecedented celebration of the written word. The inaugural Singapore Indie Bookshop Day (SGIBD) will unite 20 independent bookstores across the island from Oct. 2 to 4, 2026, creating a long weekend of curated literary discovery. While the main festivities kick off Saturday, Oct. 3, attendees can enjoy a packed calendar of programs featuring live sketching, puppet shows, zine discussions, and book swaps throughout the entire weekend.
The Bookshop Passport Rally
A centerpiece of the weekend is the free SGIBD Bookshop Passport, available at any participating store while supplies last. This guide is designed to help bibliophiles navigate their bookshop crawl and document their finds along the way. The real thrill comes from collecting stamps: visitors who gather stamps from at least 10 different bookstores become eligible for a lucky draw offering $100 in book vouchers and a curated gift box assembled by booksellers. Registration for the draw opens Oct. 3 and closes Nov. 15, 2026. While the passport remains valid for stamp collection through the end of the year, only stamps gathered during the SGIBD weekend qualify for the prize.
The Three Curated Bookshop Trails
To make the sprawling event manageable, SGIBD has designed three distinct bookshop trails, each offering a different flavor of Singapore’s literary landscape.
Trail 1: Bras Basah & Kampong Gelam — This artistic hub blends books with visual culture. Basheer Graphic Books hosts illustrator David Tsnen for a live sketching session. At Wardah Books, a “Batik Librarian” counter explores stories woven into textile patterns, while poet Madi offers personalized 30-minute poetry consultations. The shop also hosts a bilingual dialogue between Singaporean and Indonesian booksellers. Nurul Anwar Bookstore brings a poetic “doctor” station and a workshop on the traditional Javanese keris.
Trail 2: Chinatown & Tanjong Pagar — This route is a haven for picture-book lovers and fiction enthusiasts. Eliko Picture Books & things stages an improvised puppet show and an eco-storytelling session for children. Book Bar offers an intimate look at what the President reads, displaying Tharman Shanmugaratnam’s personal book recommendations alongside a creative nonfiction reading. Littered with Books serves up literary confections during a food-inspired reading session.
Trail 3: Joo Chiat & East Coast — This eastern trail pairs book hunting with café hopping. Woods in the Books anchors the fun with the Easties Book & Craft Market and the relaunch of Alfian Sa’at’s The Invisible Manuscript. City Book Room features discussions on zine-making and debut novels. Just a short detour away, Dakota Dreams brings the online bookstore Wormhole into the real world for a weekend pop-up complete with literary games, comics talks, and two PowerPoint parties exploring everything from queer horror to the art of translation.
Practical Tips for Bookshop Crawling
Guided bus tours visiting five bookshops each on the Great World and Tai Seng routes were planned, but both sold out swiftly due to high demand. Most individual programs remain free and open to the public without registration, though some workshops require advance booking.
The spirit of SGIBD is one of gentle exploration. Organizers encourage visitors to wear comfortable shoes, bring water and an umbrella for Singapore’s tropical weather, and—most importantly—leave room for serendipity. “Don’t try to conquer everything,” they advise, emphasizing that the weekend is about browsing, reading, and discovering neighborhood gems.
A Weekend for the Literary Soul
The Singapore Indie Bookshop Day represents a major milestone for the island’s literary community. In an age of digital convenience, this collective celebration is a powerful testament to the enduring relevance of physical bookstores as cultural anchors and community spaces. For readers, it is an unparalleled opportunity to explore hidden corners of the nation’s literary landscape and connect with the passionate booksellers who curate them.
